This is a famous and formidable part of the climb to Mount Everest's summit, located near the top of the southeast ridge at about 8,790 meters (28,839 feet) above sea level. Named after Sir Edmund Hillary, who, along with Tenzing Norgay, first summited Everest in 1953, the Hilary Step is a near-vertical rock face that presented a significant challenge to climbers. Navigating the Hilary Step required careful climbing, as only one person could ascend or descend at a time. This made it a notorious and crucial part of the journey to the summit. In 2015, after earthquake the Hilary Step had collapsed. The collapse has changed the nature of this part of the climb, making it slightly easier technically, but still the area remains challenging due to its extreme altitude and exposure to the elements. Even without the Hilary Step in its original form, this section of the ascent still demands respect and caution from those attempting to reach the top of the world's highest peak.
