@chefbrandonallen: How to Use a Honing Rod (after doing it wrong for 20 years) Step 1) Hold the honing rod, steel or ceramic, out in front of you. Step 2) Place the tip of the knife at the base of the honing rod, with the edge towards the handle of the honing rod, and slide the knife along the rod while moving down to the heel of the knife. Step 3) Do the same motion with the knife on the other side of the honing rod. Step 4) If you want to do the same thing, but start at the heel of the knife, great, go for it, just make sure you’re moving away from the sharpened edge. Step 5) Try and hold the knife at about a 20 degree angle on the honing rod. You’’re not sharpening it, you’re just realigning the apex. So long as the very tip of the sharpened edge is running along the honing rod, mission accomplished. This is how you hone a knife with a honing rod.

takes a humble person to call himself out. a brave and humble to call himself out in public, but it takes someone interested in learning his whole life to call himself out, in public, and for the learning benefit of others. 🤝

coming from someone who does a lot of metal work, when you work against the point, it pushes the metal back, so you always push the blade forward, so the fragments will sharpen. so essentially, yes, it worked. but it also took a lot out of your blade well doing it.

So in practice it doesn't actually matter and it based on the fact that "realigning the edge" isn't actually a thing. The way the rods work is that they're harder than the steel, and grooved, which means they abrade. It puts on a tiny microbevel, removing the metal from the very apex. This is why you do it slightly steeper than the sharpening angle.

we need a macro shot of the blades edge because otherwise it's "trust me bro" - (I agree with this logic tho)

That's how I've done it forever precisely for that reason.
.
I never understood the forward motion we keep seeing in so many tutorials. It's as if those people understood nothing about what the process is about and considered honing as a « soft sharpening ».
.
Also, I always cringe at any blade movement towards the hilt of the rod. This is a crazy lack of self preservation instinct.

We Brits do not call them honing rods. They're steels to us.

sometimes it takes a random comment from a random person to make you take a step back and think about why you do a specific thing. usually its because thats how you've always done it and it works well enough without ever thinking about if it could be done better.

while you are correct partially, direction doesn't matter with a hone. only technique, both ways on a steel work fine, only one way works on leather as it is soft as you brought up
