A 40-year-old Church of England vicar who repeatedly sexually abused a three-year-old girl has been jailed for more than nine years. Leeds Crown Court heard that Gordon Newton, of Huddersfield, who worked in Batley, admitted six counts of sexually assaulting a girl under 13 alongside six further offences. Newton's crimes were uncovered when his wife handed his old mobile phone to police, leading officers to discover 276 indecent images of children, including 70 Category A files. Detectives also found web searches showing Newton actively sought abuse images of children younger than three. Judge Tom Bayliss KC condemned Newton as a hypocrite who betrayed his position of trust, jailing him for nine years and seven months with lifetime registration on the Sex Offenders Register.
