States are introducing bills to designate mRNA COVID-19 vaccines as “weapons of mass destruction.” Bills introduced in Minnesota, Arizona and Tennessee sought to prohibit certain mRNA injections and products, including COVID-19 vaccines. Their language reaches beyond vaccination requirements, targeting activities such as manufacturing, possessing and distributing the products. Arizona’s HB 2974 proposed treating their use as terrorism, while Tennessee’s SB 1949 would apply penalties associated with weapons of mass destruction. Minnesota’s HF 3219 explicitly proposed the weapons designation. Introducing a bill does not make its provisions law. The designation is language proposed by lawmakers, not a scientific finding that vaccines are biological weapons. The proposals come amid misinformation about mRNA technology and COVID-19 vaccines, including claims that the shots rewrite human DNA or cause COVID-19. In reality, mRNA vaccines give cells temporary instructions to make a viral protein, helping the immune system recognize it. The mRNA does not enter the cell’s nucleus, where DNA is stored, and does not alter a person’s genes. Cells eventually break down the instructions. These vaccines contain no live coronavirus and cannot cause COVID-19. An infection after vaccination does not mean the vaccine caused it. Like any medical intervention, vaccination carries risks. Common side effects include a sore arm, fatigue, headache and fever. Rare but serious reactions include severe allergic reactions and myocarditis or pericarditis – inflammation of the heart muscle or surrounding tissue. The heart-inflammation risk has been highest in adolescent and young adult males, and some cases require hospitalization.
