For anyone shipping agents, it changes the business case. An agent run is not one prompt — it is dozens of calls, retries, tool loops and long contexts. Inference is your biggest line item, and it scales with usage instead of headcount. A 30% discount on that is a different company. So two things are true at once. Your token bill is negotiable in a way it was not six months ago — if you are spending real money, ask. And the provider lock-in you accepted last year is now a liability. Teams who built a clean model-swap layer can move workloads in an afternoon and let the labs bid. Teams who hardcoded one API are paying list price for the privilege. The frontier labs spent two years competing on capability.
