@california.history: 💫🌲🔥 California is investing in something Indigenous communities understood long before the state existed.💫 Fire isn't always the enemy.🤔😎 For generations, Native California tribes used carefully planned cultural burns to maintain healthy landscapes, encourage the growth of important plants, reduce accumulated vegetation and protect their communities. Fire was part of stewardship. Then colonization changed everything. Indigenous burning practices were increasingly restricted and suppressed, while government policies emphasized putting fires out rather than understanding their ecological role. Over time, those changes contributed to landscapes with heavier fuel loads, alongside the effects of logging, development, climate change and decades of fire suppression. Now California is beginning to recognize the value of knowledge it once pushed aside. Through programs such as CAL FIRE's Tribal Wildfire Resilience Grants, funding is being directed toward tribal wildfire prevention, vegetation management and culturally informed stewardship. The approach combines traditional ecological knowledge with modern wildfire science. And it represents something bigger than fire prevention. It recognizes that Indigenous communities possess generations of experience caring for California's landscapes. These practices were never simply relics of the past.💫 They are living traditions. 🌲 California isn't discovering an entirely new solution. It's creating opportunities for Indigenous knowledge to help shape how the land is managed today. The question is why it took so long to listen. #CaliforniaBuriedHistory #NativeCalifornia #CulturalBurning #IndigenousKnowledge #CaliforniaWildfires
