They Said the Met Changed... So a Reporter Went Undercover 💀 Two and a half years ago, an independent review called out the Metropolitan Police for being institutionally homophobic, misogynistic, and racist. The Met insisted its culture had changed—so BBC Panorama’s Rory Bibb went undercover for 7 months as a civilian detention officer at London’s Charing Cross police station to see if they actually meant it. Spoiler: some officers just got more careful about who they trust.   ⚠️ Warning: This report details disturbing, discriminatory, violent, and misogynistic behaviour.   👉 What the hidden cameras caught Extreme Racism & Xenophobia: While off-duty at a pub, PC Phil Neilson was secretly filmed calling Somalians
👉 What the hidden cameras caught Extreme Racism & Xenophobia: While off-duty at a pub, PC Phil Neilson was secretly filmed calling Somalians "scum" and "ugly," claiming "any foreign person is the worst to deal with". He also stated that "Islamics" do not have the "correct way of life" and said of certain suspects, "either put a bullet through his head or deport him".  Bragging About Brutality & Cover-Ups: CCTV footage showed a sergeant stomping twice on a restrained detainee's leg/ankle. PC Martin Borg was filmed laughing about the incident, describing how the guy screamed and joking about how he backed up the sergeant's claim in their official statements ("Whatever you say, Sarge").  Reveling in Force: Another officer bragged that he loved taking fingerprints by force, detailing how he grabs detainees' fingers and pulls hard enough to "snap the tendon". A different officer laughed about whacking the back of a leg-restrained man's legs in a police van while the man smashed his head, bragging that he "never got a complaint".  Blatant Misogyny & Dismissing Victims: Sergeant Joe McIlvenny was filmed making vulgar, body-shaming jokes about a woman. Later, when the custody team discussed a suspect accused of rape and domestic violence who allegedly kicked a pregnant woman in the stomach, McIlvenny dismissed the victim's account, saying, "That's what she says... I mean, I doubt it"—infuriating a female colleague.  The "Mask On" Culture: While the reporter did film times where officers worked professionally and with empathy, secret pub footage revealed officers admitting they put a "mask on" when someone new joins until they figure out what they can and can't say around them.  The Fallout: Following this October 2025 investigation, 11 people employed at the station—most of them serving police officers—were placed under formal investigation for gross misconduct.  Do you think the system can actually be reformed from the inside, or is the culture too deep?
