The ending of THE SHINING remains one of the most haunting mysteries in cinema. In the film’s final moments, the camera slowly zooms in on a photograph taken at the Overlook Hotel’s July 4th Ball in 1921, revealing Jack Torrance standing among the guests, despite the story taking place decades later. So what does it mean? One theory suggests that Jack has always been part of the hotel, destined to repeat its cycle of violence. Another proposes that the Overlook has absorbed his soul, making him part of its dark history. There’s also the possibility that Jack is the reincarnation of a former guest, as the hotel’s manager, Grady, hints when he tells Jack he has always been the caretaker. Stanley Kubrick never provided a definitive explanation, leaving the photograph open to interpretation. Perhaps the most terrifying possibility is that Jack was never truly an outsider at the Overlook. Perhaps he was always meant to be there. What do you think the ending really means? #theshiningedit #theshining #horror #stanleykubrick
