I’m currently working on six unfinished paintings. My oil painting process is built around layers, and because I work primarily wet-on-dry, there’s only so much I can do before I have to put a painting down and let it dry. This typically takes several days. So while one oil painting dries, I work on another. And if inspiration strikes for something new, I usually start it. Creative energy is limited, especially when you’re making art around a full-time job, and I like to follow an idea while I’m excited about it. I also keep gouache paintings in the rotation because they give me something my oil paintings absolutely do not…instant gratification. There’s less setup, less mess, the paint dries quickly, and I can actually finish something in a reasonable amount of time. Meanwhile, my oil paintings can take months to finish. Occasionally years…I’m working on that. #OilPainting #PaintingProcess #WorkInProgress #GouachePainting #ContemporaryPainting
