The Sweet Track (World's Oldest Engineered Road) is located on the Somerset Levels and idates back to 3807 BC. It is widely recognised as the oldest engineered roadway discovered anywhere in the world. The Concept of Zero (Western Introduction) was introduced by the medieval mathematician Adelard of Bath (born in 1080) and is credited with first introducing the concept of zero and Hindu numerals to the Western world. In 1781, astronomer William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus from the back garden of his home in Bath, marking the first time a planet was discovered using a telescope. In 1848 in Chard, inventor John Stringfellow built the world's first engine powered unmanned aircraft to successfully achieve sustained flight. Because of this, Chard is famously known as the birthplace of powered flight.
