@museum.on.the.go: In February 1912, just two months before one of history’s most infamous maritime disasters, the RMS Titanic was captured on film at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland (now Northern Ireland). Believed to have been recorded on February 3, 1912, this extraordinary footage is considered the only known authentic motion-picture footage of the Titanic herself. The silent film shows the massive ocean liner undergoing final preparations, with shipyard workers walking alongside the vessel and smoke rising from one of its funnels. Unlike many historical videos incorrectly identified as the Titanic, which actually show her sister ship, RMS Olympic, this rare footage provides a genuine glimpse of the legendary vessel before her maiden voyage. On April 10, 1912, the Titanic departed Southampton, England, bound for New York City with approximately 2,200 passengers and crew aboard. Just four days later, on the night of April 14, the supposedly unsinkable ocean liner struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic. In the early morning hours of April 15, the Titanic disappeared beneath the ocean, claiming the lives of approximately 1,500 people. The tragedy shocked the world and led to major improvements in maritime safety regulations.
