@dailymailuk: Oxford Street has officially gone traffic-free! 🚶 One of London’s busiest shopping streets has been pedestrianised for the first time, with almost 1km of road closed to cars, buses, taxis and cyclists from Monday (October 26). The changes are part of Mayor Sadiq Khan’s plans to transform the famous shopping destination, which attracts around 500,000 visitors a day. The wider £150million regeneration project will see more than 50 trees, 100 new seats and two public squares introduced, with major improvements expected in 2027. Oxford Street generates around £3.1billion in annual retail spending, and City Hall hopes the changes will attract more shoppers and boost local businesses. A trial traffic-free event in September 2025 saw footfall jump by 45% compared with the previous Sunday, while 66% of respondents to a public consultation supported pedestrianisation. However, concerns remain over increased congestion on surrounding roads and the impact on public transport. An improvement for who? Just seems like they’ve created a mugger’s paradise as access for emergency services will be hindered by the no vehicles (including cycles) rule

Most towns pedestrian precincts are empty... people would rather park at a shopping centre...it's got the same shops as any high street 👍😋

Mind you these angry people live in towns where the full high street has been pedestrianised for hundreds of years. You can’t drive cars and busses up Ipswich town centre!

There has not been a single state primary school playground extension in central London since the pandemic whilst they have closed down roads and extended seating areas across the capital to protect private businesses.
