@lolahemp: You’ve probably seen it right after they get up. Or at dinner, while they’re standing over their bowl. The back legs start to tremble, and they keep shifting their weight like they can’t get comfortable. Most of us assume it’s their joints. They’re getting old, and their hips are giving out. I’m not a vet. But in eight years of building Lolahemp, I’ve talked with thousands of senior dog owners, vets and canine physical therapists. Here’s what I’ve learned. A lot of the time, that shake isn’t just the joints. It’s muscle working hard to hold them up. As dogs age, muscle loss tends to show most in the back legs. The front end often keeps its muscle, so from the front they can look completely fine. That’s why it’s so easy to miss. Standing still is real work for weaker muscles. When those muscles tire, they shake. And it can feed itself. When the back legs feel less steady, many dogs lean more on their front legs. The back legs get used less, and lose even more. If the shaking is new, sudden, or comes with other changes, bring it up with your vet. Shaking can have more than one cause. The good news is muscle can often be supported, even in older dogs, with the right kind of movement. And the earlier you notice, the more you can do. Here’s the 1 minute check I’d do tonight: ✋ Feel the back of their thighs, then their shoulders. If the thighs feel bonier, they’ve likely lost muscle there. Here are 3 simple moves canine physical therapists use: 🪑 Sit to stand: 3 to 5 slow reps, guided with a treat. A dog squat for the muscles they stand with. ⛰️ Gentle hills: walking uphill puts more work on the back legs. 🧹 Pole walks: walk them slowly over a broom handle laid flat. Lifting each leg builds coordination. Start small, a little each day. If their legs already shake, begin with 1 or 2 sit to stands, and stop if the shaking gets worse. 👉 Share this with a dog parent who can benefit.
