@mattbarnes: Al Leiter and Harold Reynolds tell the hilarious story of working the World Series set when Al said you have to knock David Ortiz down to slow him down. Ortiz was crushing the opposition at the time, and Al explained that a pitcher had to move his feet and keep him from getting comfortable. Harold remembers how, after the game, Ortiz walked over with the MVP trophy in hand and let Al know exactly how he felt. Al says he held his ground and would have done it again. They tell it with laughter, a story about old-school pitching philosophy meeting one of the game’s biggest personalities live on TV.
0.668 in the World Series. 11-16. With 8 walks. I would’ve LOVED to have seen Al try at that time

Coach always said if he’s comfortable in the box, take him to the dance. Make him move his feet!

💯🔥👍 This is awesome and Harold and Al are 💯 right. David was even better vs the Yankees that year. For me it is the greatest postseason by a hitter ever.

Nobody brushed back Papi. When Clemens threw up amd in to Manny, the next pitch was a curve ball and Manny was petrified to dig in and made this anemic swing for strike 3. Throwing in is necessary for any pitcher. Not hitting a batter but make them uncomfortable.

Al is 100% correct. The game changed and players are weak now.

Papi was transcendent that postseason. Possibly the greatest individual WS performance in history. He had 15 ABs through 4+ games and only had one more official AB in the final 15 or so innings of the series. The Cards were DONE with his bullshit. It was awesome.

Yeah the game is soft. I was a catcher in the mid teens in the minors. I tried to convince my pitchers to pitch hard inside.

I got so confused bc I forgot we beat the cardinals in the World Series a second time 😂. “I was like cardinals, Rockies, some team, dodgers. Who tf was the third one?”

Data analytics says not to waste a pitch throwing inside to brush a guy off. It’s all stats and a brush off isn’t a category.

i think if you knock him down, he's a right to beat the ish out of you. you gotta be accountable for actions.

Nothing wrong with anything Leiter said. Pitching inside is part of pitching. Drilling players, throwing at their heads… nah fuck that.
