this is my issue with foodbanks too, stop donating expired gross food. if you would not eat it why in God's green earth would you ask anybody else especially a family in need to eat it... it's disgusting and it needs to stop

in my area people will donate their trash to avoid the fees because they say "the shelters and stuff can write it off" makes me pissed

What do you mean people in need don’t want a vase that’s missing pieces, and has been shattered and glued back together 4 times? They’re in need. They obviously need a broken vase. They can just sell it or something 🙄🙄 /j /sar. (What upsets me is someone else has most likely had this thought, but as a genuine thing, and not as a bit)

I remember when I used to volunteer at a food bank we constantly had people dropping off expired food, food that was ate up by mice and boxes full of roach poop around the food. Once had someone drop over nearly a 100 glass jars of mystery homemade canned stuff with no dates or labels and since we couldn’t throw glass in the trash and most of it was liquid me and another volunteer had to stand and open each one and dump them down the toilet and all of them smelt rancid.

I love this, I was lucky enough to get out with out a DV shelter. But not all women are, and shelters are so important to some people's safety.

My fiance used to live in an apartment building when we first started dating and the lady down the hall had put notes on everyone’s doors he woke me up to it and it along the lines was her asking if we had old clothes and stuff we didn’t want anymore or weren’t using if we could give them to her so she could take them to her work for the kids teens and adults that would come in that didn’t have anything with them , she worked for a mental health facility , I about cried we instantly went through his clothes and then when he was dropping me off I told him I’d go through my clothes and the next time he comes and gets me well put my bags of stuff I didn’t use anymore and we could just take all to her at once we took it to her and she was so thankful we told her to let us know for future times when she’d need more or anything like that we made sure none had holes or anything like we gave tshirts long sleeves shorts jeans pants sweat pants etc and I would rather take my clothes to shelters or mental health facilities then goodwill any day I know what it’s like to be popped out somewhere with nothing and they already are having a rough time they don’t deserve to go without :(

Are gently used and freshly washed clothes okay? Sometimes I thrift stuff without realizing I don’t quite like it, but I think someone else would

I like to set a couple boxes, one of actual usable and in tact things like still wearable and WASHED clothes, old office supply I never used, books, working DVDs, clean kids toys, and then a box of literally anything else and that goes to to goodwill/savers for them to sort through 🤣

Every year me and my family go through our clothes we have from the summer and winter, try on everything, and we donate whatever doesn't fit to helping hands for people. I like donating there cause the profit it makes off the clothes and other items pays the bills, pays the people working, and they use it to pay other people's bills who need it, without any form of repayment. And because so much is donated all the time, they're able to keep selling everything for super cheap. I do notice though that a lot of people will hand them things with bugs in it or smoke residue, so we always double bag our stuff to keep it from also getting infected.

My mom always taught me if I wouldn’t be willing to pay for it so bit donate it. Stained clothes? Trash. Puzzle missing a piece? Trash. Chipped vase? Trash. Now there are arts and crafts places that take junky things because they use them for art or like some schools use broken electronics for learning. But shelters? No. Only something you would buy for yourself. Not style wise but condition wise.

ppl need to use “buy nothing” groups on fb more i get rid of junk on there all the time and it’s often junk that i deemed not good enough to donate. with those groups, ppl are deciding to bring home your junk instead of you dumping your junk and creating more work for the shelter

There’s so many things wrong that people do when it comes to food banks and two of my biggest complaints are people who bring the cheapest things they can find ,and people who use the food bank as a place to dump all the stuff that’s been sitting in their pantry for years . I get it you’re trying to be nice ,and people have the mentality “beggars can’t be choosers “ but think about it if you had to wake up ,and make the decision to leave everything you own besides what you can carry , to get yourself out of a horrible situation wouldn’t you want something nice to ? I mean there’s kids who end up in these shelters with parents, whole families at times everyone deserves something nice especially after essentially fighting for their lives .
