bet you say (R). (R)-2-bromobutane + cyanide in DMSO, one step. does the product flip? 👇 search "inkling orgo" on the App Store or go to tryinkling.app does it flip, how to actually tell, for orgo 1 midterm 2 SN1 and SN2 stereochemistry: step 1, SN2 hits from the back. the nucleophile comes in opposite the leaving group in one step, so the other three groups flip like an umbrella in the wind (inversion), and a wedge becomes a dash. here (R)-2-bromobutane gives (S)-2-methylbutanenitrile. step 2, SN1 goes flat. the leaving group leaves first, the + carbon is flat, and the nucleophile lands on either face, so you get both configurations, a racemic mix. slide 5 is the 3 traps 🧐 the wedge always flips in SN2 but the R/S letter can stay the same if the new group ranks differently, a 1° carbon still inverts even when you can't see it, and "SN1 = racemic" only holds when that carbon is the only stereocenter. if your answer key just says "(S)" and nothing else, inkling explains why on your exact problem. (R) or (S), what did you say? 👇 and if you're reading this far, here's a treat: i'm working on a new feature: practice exams! they're made to cover multiple topics at once and make sure you're as ready as you can be for your next orgo midterm. i think this will be a lil better than your typical practice exam. interested? comment "practice makes perfect" below and i'll send you an early invite 🤓 #ochem #organicchemistry #sn2 #studytok #examprep
