@transformationprincess: Microsoft has announced a voluntary exit offer to a reported 60,000 employees world wide (over 25% of employees) to make room for AI infrastructure spending. Tell me your thoughts in the comments, is this just a layoff with another name, or a better approach? #ai #microsft #technologynews #ailayoffs
this is just a layoff with no chance of collecting unemployment. you get severance if you take it, and if you refuse you'll get laid off without severance.

Microsoft is worth 3.9 trillion dollars btw. They can afford to keep all of their employees for hundreds of years

As a former Microsoftee this is a ruse. If you don’t take it you’re going to get put in a list. And then you’ll be part of a RIF or terminated for cause. It’s just so they don’t have to cut executive bonuses.

25% of employees is layoff no matter what you call it. Offering severance when firing people used to be customary but I guess now this is viewed as “voluntary buyout” or “nice”

So what if your offered it but decline? Are you going to get actually laid off?

voluntary exit is a layoff no doubt. having been through both involuntary and voluntary ones at my big tech co, i think it's a less bad way to do a bad thing. these have been happening on a rolling basis throughout the industry for a couple of years now.

Offering a buyout to 25% of your work force while sales are growing 20%/yr and earnings 30%/yr says something about the future intrinsic need for people to grow.

This is for AI related things no doubt. But I'd question there AI gains from using it. Problem is that their cashflow and debt is really good still, abeit squeezed.

So like if all these companies lay everyone off, who’s going to buy their product?

My company did something like this. Barely anyone took it tbh as it was kinda treated as a way to get dissenters out.

I took this voluntary separation at Starbucks in August 2025. It was a layoff with a different name, because not enough people actually took the offer and they did layoffs one months later.

25%? Wow. I was curious at the growth in headcount and profit since 2020. They’re laying off nearly the entire workforce they added since 2020 despite increasing profits 230% in the same time frame.

I’m a MSFT new grad and it’s genuinely insane how everybody on our floor got this 🚶♀️and I would consider us a generally important area so part of me thinks this is a numbers game because they have a general idea of the certain teams/orgs they do want to get rid of

My friend’s company does these and that’s how they maintain that they’ve “never done a lay off”

never take voluntary resignation if you did nothing wrong. it means you forfeit a lot of protections.

This is simply layoffs repackaged as early retirement and voluntary exit programs to minimize negative public perception and protect shareholder confidence. Companies across the country are prioritizing profits over people while presenting workforce reductions as employee benefits. It’s a troubling corporate trend that deserves far more scrutiny and public attention.
