@rebekahslegacy: Leaving an abusive relationship is not as simple as walking out the door. For some survivors, it takes multiple attempts before they are finally able to leave. The most often cited estimate is that it can take an average of seven attempts but every situation is different. Leaving can also be one of the most dangerous times for a victim. Fear of retaliation, threats, financial dependence, concerns for children and pets, isolation, and personal safety can make leaving incredibly difficult. On top of these barriers, survivors may be dealing with trauma, fear, anxiety, and the emotional exhaustion of living in an abusive situation. Abuse can erode a person's confidence, sense of self, and ability to trust their own judgment. Leaving isn't simply walking away from a relationship, it's facing an uncertain future while trying to navigate the lasting effects of the abuse they experienced. Instead of asking, “Why don't they just leave?” we need to ask, “What barriers are they facing, and how can we support them safely?” Leaving is a process, not a single moment. Compassion matters. #rebekahslegacy #domesticviolenceawareness #domesticviolenceeducation
