I currently have Democrat Phil Weiser winning Colorado's gubernatorial election by 24.3 points. This is an open seat, as incumbent Governor Jared Polis is leaving office after two terms. Although Polis has faced some declining popularity, he still won reelection by nearly 20 points in 2022. Colorado has also continued shifting toward Democrats in recent elections, especially in the Denver suburbs, which have become increasingly Democratic. Democrats nominated current Attorney General Phil Weiser after he defeated Senator Michael Bennet in the primary. I think Bennet was seen as more of an establishment figure, while Weiser offers a good balance of political experience without being as closely connected to the national Democratic Party. His experience as attorney general also gives him a strong background in statewide politics. Meanwhile, Republicans nominated Victor Marx after a very close primary against Barbara Kirkmeyer. Marx has been surrounded by controversy, particularly over allegations concerning his past and personal conduct that have circulated online. The attention surrounding them has become part of the discussion about his candidacy. I also think his strongly conservative positions could make it harder for him to connect with Colorado's increasingly Democratic suburban electorate. Kirkmeyer, with her more moderate political background, might have presented a different challenge. Overall, I have Weiser winning by a comfortable 24.3-point margin. Between Colorado's recent Democratic trends, Weiser's statewide experience, and the controversies surrounding Marx's campaign, I expect this race to remain safely Democratic.
