As someone who has worked for RCCL for the last 10 years, I am extremely disappointed when people remove gratuities.
100% of the restaurant management team’s salary depends on them. Over the past year, my salary has dropped by at least 30% compared to what I used to earn. Yet I still do exactly the same job and work the same number of hours. All because 50% of guests decide to “tip in cash,” which is not true.
After a 7-day cruise, a waiter might get an envelope with $10–$20 in it, or sometimes nothing at all.
Back when I was a waiter in the MDR, you wouldn’t believe how many times I received an EMPTY envelope. Literally nothing.
Now I’m the person responsible for handling ALL your reservations and requests for both the MDR and specialty restaurants.
I start organizing everything at least 7 days before your cruise even begins.
Requests can include absolutely anything: seating arrangements for large parties, allergies, birthdays, preferred table locations — you name it.
And then, during dinner service, I have to deal with all your requests your lousy travel agents promise you but never actually deliver.
This is just a small example of what I and the other members of the restaurant management team do every single day to make sure you enjoy your vacation.
You can say a thousand times that cruise companies should pay us a proper salary, and I completely agree. But the reality is, this is how the system works, and unfortunately, it is what it is.
