I never understood the concept that having a child is… a punishment??

I think choosing to be child-free is just as valid as choosing to have children. It’s great when women feel empowered to make the choice that’s right for them, without pressure from society. But criticizing or looking down on women who choose motherhood is just the opposite side of the same coin.

The important distinction: I think the MOST important thing I've done is bringing my child into the world but I don't want STRANGERS and other people thinking that about me.

my sister just gave birth about a month ago, and when I went to the hospital to see her I started by going to her. i didn't look for the baby or acknowledge that. i wanted to see my sister, and ask how she was doing. my family had to go "hey, the baby is over here" and I was just like. so? i haven't met that guy yet. but my sister is right here. the one I've spent most of my life with. the one I talk to and care about. i want to check on her first.

Tbh, I’ve been all consumed with baby bs for the past 1.5yrs. I genuinely don’t have anything else to talk about, so I totally understand if ppl don’t wanna talk to me. If a friend wants to tell me about her life, I’m down, but I don’t have anything to say, unless you wanna hear about baby bs. I’m fine with it for now, bc I went in knowing I wanted to go hard af the first 3-5yrs of my baby’s life. I had a firm identity before becoming a mom, and now I’m content for my identity to be mom. Ofc I assume that will change as my baby gets older, so I def do still try to be a friend. For instance, scheduled a call tomorrow to hear about my oldest friend’s home renovations.

What I hate is someone saying I didn't give birth because I had a C-Section. Excuse me???

It's so weird that the making of life in our body, a thing only women can do, is seen as a 'punishment' or somehow a diss.

It’s not really an accomplishment. Celebrate yourself but don’t expect to get celebrated for reproduction.

I’ve always prioritized bringing a gift specifically for my cousin when we visit that doesn’t have to do with motherhood. Sometimes I think when/if women become mothers that becomes their whole identity to people. I want her to know I see her as her own person.

I want to be a mom and nothing is going to change that but speaking as a nanny who regularly goes out with a small child + LOOKS like a mom, people are fucking evil to moms.

I have been a mom longer than I have been anything else. When they were little I felt like that a mom is all I was and not just to my kids but to everyone. But eventually they grew and became more independent and my husband grew and took up more of the parenting responsibilities and I was able to explore who I am besides mom and wife. But I am blessed to have been able to do that. I wasn't playing the role of both parents and I had a partner not just a spouse. I do not look down on anyone who doesn't want to have kids. It's the hardest job in the world, and they don't even give you a course or a test before doing it, so you're just winging it hoping you do it right. Ridiculous! So I try to help and support all the moms in my life and try to give them the support so they don't have to discover who they are besides moms but know who they are already on top of being a mom.

I'm a stay at home mom and I so appreciate friends like you. I feel very lucky with how my life is right now and the fact that I'm able to have a life outside of motherhood. Also here's a picture from when I won a medal in swordfighting this weekend!

You can be an amazing career focused woman and an amazing mother. Two things can be true, it’s not easy, but possible, Of course if that’s what you want! What helps is finding friends that are of the same mindset! 🥰

Yes omg one of the reasons I broke things off with a guy I was talking to, is that he kept referring to his child mother as child’s name mom. And there was so many times that I was like you mean (her name) and he would just brush it off and be like you that’s child’s name mom. Like she is more than just a mom just because she had a kid doesn’t mean she is not a person outside of that.

Okay wow I didn’t realize I was gonna cry. Ever since I found out I was pregnant it feels like most of my family and just so many people on my life just see me as nothing more than a mom now, they keep telling me I’m being selfish for buying myself things and not spending all my money on this baby, but like. I’m allowed to live and be my own person, yeah I’m having a baby but that’s not all I am.

It’s absolutely the fact SOCIETY punishes women with motherhood. It isn’t inherently a punishment but can be used as one. Two things can be true at once

one thing that I realized during this (my first) pregnancy, is I will never get this level of healthcare again. which is kind of sad. they care about my wellbeing now, but once my son comes out, it’ll be back to the same routine it was before.

its strange how much my identity goes away the second people find out I have a kid. I purposely never lead with it, not that I don't love my kid- its because everyone thinks im used

Some of us have a deep desire to be mothers. Some of us don’t. Why is this even an argument?

Not really what you're speaking to, but there's definitely a point with pregnancy announcements where it goes from genuine congratulations and excitement to just... How do you expect me to be happy for someone having kid #6? #12? At that point there's no way they aren't parentifying their older kids, and they're becoming a worse parent with every additional pregnancy they bring to term.
