@itsstillthatkid: 25 years ago today, Donnie Darko was released. And somehow, a movie about a troubled teenager, a terrifying rabbit, and the end of the world became one of the most unforgettable cult classics of our generation. For a lot of us, we didn’t discover Donnie Darko in theaters. We found it years later through a borrowed DVD, a late-night recommendation, or a friend who insisted we HAD to watch it. And when it ended, we probably had no idea what the hell we just watched. But we couldn’t stop thinking about it. The soundtrack. The October atmosphere. Frank the Rabbit. The questions the movie refused to answer. And then there was Donnie himself. Angry, sarcastic, confused, questioning everything. He was the kind of character a lot of teenagers could relate to, even if they couldn’t explain why. What’s interesting is how differently the movie hits when you watch it as an adult. When we were younger, we were obsessed with figuring out the time travel, the alternate realities, and what the ending actually meant. Now, there’s so much more to notice. The loneliness. The relationships. The complicated family dynamics. The sadness underneath all the weirdness. I think that’s part of why Donnie Darko has lasted 25 years. You can watch it at 16, watch it again at 35, and walk away thinking about completely different things. And that soundtrack still hits just as hard. Happy 25th anniversary, Donnie Darko. 🐰 I’m curious: How old were you when you first watched it? And did you actually understand what was happening? #DonnieDarko #CultClassic #MovieNostalgia #2000sMovies #FilmTok
