For centuries, the Ottoman dynasty protected the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, financed pilgrimage caravans, and sent magnificent gifts to the sacred sanctuaries. Yet no reigning Ottoman sultan is known to have completed the pilgrimage. Was it the danger of leaving the throne, the immense responsibilities of ruling an empire, or religious interpretations of a sovereign’s duties? In 1622, Sultan Osman II’s proposed pilgrimage became part of a crisis that ended in his assassination. And there was one extraordinary exception: Prince Cem, who performed Hajj in 1482. Sources: Nir Shafir, In an Ottoman Holy Land (2020); Ahmed Akgündüz, Why Did the Ottoman Sultans Not Make Hajj? #hajj #Mecca #Medina #ottoman #ottomanarchives
