I have all these tips and ideas in my Home Building Checklist. 👉 Get it at BuilderBrigade.com Builder Credit: @DfwCustomHomeBuilder Those zigzag lines on a stud aren't a defect. That's a finger joint. Finger jointed studs are made from shorter pieces of lumber. The mill cuts out the knots and weak spots, then glues the good pieces end to end. The joint looks like interlocking fingers, which gives the glue a lot more surface to grab. That's why they're so straight. Solid sawn studs can twist, bow, or crown as they dry. Finger jointed studs have less of that. Straight studs mean flatter walls, cleaner drywall, and fewer nail pops later. Look at the grade stamp. Most finger jointed studs are stamped "vertical use only." They're made to carry weight straight down in a wall. That's why you won't see them in headers, beams, or joists that span an opening. Most areas accept them in new construction the same as regular studs. The concern some people have is the glue. So where do you stand? Fan of finger jointed studs, or a hard no? This is exactly the kind of detail in my Ultimate Home Building Checklist. Know your options before you build. #BuilderBrigade #HomeBuildingChecklist #framing #fingerjointedstuds #newconstruction

They're becoming common with long boards probably because mature trees are running out.

Why don’t pro hockey players hockey sticks that have 5 finger joints? Same reason you shouldn’t have them in a house.

The glue dissipates after several years of freezing and thawing. And yes they will get that cold in many places in Canada. I would never use them, in fact that tall of a wall i would use microllam LVLs.

They are not allowed in any bearing application at all… header or vertical bearing walls. Otherwise they are great.. no problem with them at all.

had an inspector try to fail us on a house bc we had fingerjoint rafters he thought we spliced them ourselves and told us we had to gusset the sides on every joint

They’re fine. The only time they become undone is if they’re exposed to moisture for an extended period. But if that happens, you’ve got bigger problems. 👍👍👍

Do they cost the same amount as a normal 2x4? Pretty soon Home Depot will be collecting all the cut-offs from construction sites and make their studs out of them. 4 finger joint studs for the same price as regular studs.
