Foam Roller Stomach-Supported Dumbbell Rows... I found this setup worked MUCH better than chest-supported rows for me. Chest-supported stuff CAN be effective and some people like it a lot, but personally, I've never really liked chest-supported row work because I find the compression on the chest actually takes away from the work I get on my back. I think the reason is that the chest (and related breathing muscles) are put under tension (due to the compression) and the activation of those muscles is somewhat antagonistic to activation of the back. And the body will always prioritize breathing... With this setup, I have the end of the foam roller pushing into in my ABDOMEN, NOT my chest. This causes the core to brace automatically, which is actually beneficial to rowing rather than antagonistic. I'm not fully resting my entire weight onto the foam roller... there is SOME support but a lot of it is cueing. It also forces me to keep my torso from moving up and down while rowing, which improves the strictness of the row. I'm 5'10" so my foam roller height is just about right. If you're significantly shorter or taller, you may have to adjust the setup a bit (if shorter, you may need to stand on a riser... if taller, you likely won't need to reach down as far as I do to grab the dumbbell). At the bottom of the row, let the weight pull your shoulder down/forward to get a good stretch on the upper back muscles. Then row up, bringing your arm up until it's even with your torso (that's as high as you need to come up). I like this setup a lot. That support in the abdomen really lets you maximize the stretch at the bottom of every rep. I didn't test it with 2 dumbbell rows since I like the ability to still balance with the one hand on the bench. I show a couple of different bench setups there, too (one directly in front of the bench, one off the end). Both worked fine for me. #dumbbellrow #onearmdumbellrow #backexercise #upperback #nicknilsson
