@silentpulse.mp4: the guy who coached my little brother's soccer team was a family favorite for years. then my mom found messages showing he'd been badmouthing our family to the other parents, calling my brother lazy, calling us trashy. and the next saturday, there he was on the sideline, high fiving me like nothing happened. i smiled back. i handed him a water bottle. i clapped when he told the kids good game. the whole time my skin was crawling. it's the strangest feeling, being polite to someone you've seen clearly. my mom switched my brother to a different team that spring. i don't pretend for anyone like that anymore. if i know who you really are, you get my manners, not my warmth.
