@cbcnews: Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke to reporters at the First Nations-first ministers' meeting on Monday, saying he's 'committed to a process that moves Canada beyond the Indian Act.' Carney says his views align with Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew, who he said raised the question of abolishing the act. #Indigenous #MarkCarney #IndianAct #FirstNations #CBCNews

I'm Iroquois, Mohawk and I don't agree with this. It gives them the reason to forget who we are.

No — abolishing the Indian Act would not automatically eliminate First Nations' treaty rights or benefits in Canada. The key distinction is that the Indian Act and historic treaties are separate legal instruments. ♥️

As long as everyone becomes equal, everyone has the same rights everyone has to follow the same hunting laws and fishing laws and everyone has to pay taxes into the system

I am beyond a number, I am Carrier from Kwadacha, 98% FN blood, I work hard and pay taxes, I am not the card. I love Canada and we need to move with change, heal and be the stewards of the land again. 9 years sober and healing to be a leader of my family to show them we can live and contribute to society, in a good way. I support changes.

the Act acts as a double edged sword, while restrictive, it also serves as the primary legal framework that protects specific rights, treaty obligations, and land protections under Canadian constitutional law. You cant just abolish the act with no established replacement. Abolishing the act will be detrimental to so many people and communities!!

How about update our treaty payments first ? 5 dollars a year was good way back when what would be the equivalent in todays economy? And they should retro pay as well

The Indian Act and the Treaties are very separate things. The Indian Act is a federal statute that establishes rules around governing many aspects of the relationship between the federal government and First Nations. Like First Nations administration, reserve lands, status registrations, and certain financial matters. The Treaties are agreements between First Nations and the Crown. Within the Treaties are the special rights, obligations, and promises of the Crown. Things like education rights, medical rights, hunting and fishing rights that are recognized under section 35 of the Constitution. Focusing on actions that would affect the Indian Act does not affect or change the Treaties.
