So I did my national boards in 1 year because I have no social life! If you do this route, you HAVE to start running on day 1 by making a strict timeline for yourself.

Worth it!! I got it my fourth year of teaching and now I’m year 13. I work in Tacoma at a Title I school. I did it in a year. It was a lot of work and I had to work every weekend and break. But the stipend is great and so is not tracking any clock hours for renewal.

The stipend you’re describing sounds like WA. If so, in a qualifying school, it’s actually closer to $12k a year. You get it all at once on your August paycheck. You have to renew every 5 years so each renewal (MOC) is worth close to $60k! You also get 200 clock hours which is 20 credits towards a step increase on the pay scale. If you step up and get a $5k raise, that’s an additional $25k for each renewal (bringing its value up to $80k+). It’s really not that hard and the MOC is even easier. I finished in 2 years but that’s because I was going through my sister on hospice and my dad dying. I do know some people struggle with the component 1 assessment but that is not a part of the renewal process. You only do it once.

Yes! I’m in Bremerton WA! I’ve been getting an extra $11,000 a year since 2009. It’s totally worth it! Back then, we had to do it all in one year. You can do it!

i’m doing it right now! it’s a part of my masters degree so i’m getting credits for it also. i’m getting a 17k salary increase when i’m done. i’d definitely join a cohort program if you can. it takes the planning and scheduling headache away.

My district only gives like $4k total spread over 5 years for it wtf. We also don’t get a pay boost for a masters tho 🙃

@Sarah Hetzler: I started the process and am doing all 4 components in 1 year (fingers crossed). My district gives a stipend if we pass and also provides fee support so we don’t have to pay for the components so I don’t have that added financial pressure. But I will say that it’s a lot of work. If you are used to grad school though it’s a similar feeling 😁 if you have the time and energy, try to do all in 1 year because you won’t know if you pass until December after the submission window!

Do it for the money. It’s not THAT hard. I did it before the new stuff was all finished and did it over 3 years. It’s nothing harder than what I did in college.

why would you want to do it? The benefits can be great or nothing depending on the state. It was worth it for me. It genuinely challenged me to become a better teacher. I did it in two years, you can take only one or up to three (five if you need to retry for a better score). I’m in my mid-thirties, so around your age? I finished two years ago as a middle childhood generalist. Happy to talk in dm if you have more questions!

Totally worth it, Mandy!! It’s amazing professional development/ reflection, and the bonus over the years adds up! Our district has some good support too. But I’m in the category of those old people who got it a while ago. :)

It’s worth it! I did it over the course of 3 years. Year 1 I did component 1 which is just a test, and year 2 I did the last 3. Year 3 I retook the test and one other component

I'm on year 12 of teaching. Completed it in one year during my 10th, found out mid year last year that I passed. honestly, it wasn't hard it was just a lot of work. I think of it as one year of work for about $30k for the give years it lasts!

my mom in washington has hers and it's worth it to her for the stipend. in my state, the stipend is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller and honestly not worth it for me at this point in time. look into your state and district benefits and go from there :)

Worth it! I’ve had it for 10 years so have made over $60,000 from that stipend. I took 1 year. Renewal is much easier

In my experience, it was totally worth it! My state paid for the components and has a stipend for $10k/year once you certify. It took me three years because I did component 4 the first year, components 1 and 2 the second, and component 3 the third
