I’ve belonged to UPC church my entire life. I’ve never seen anyone called out and purposely embarrassed. I’ve never seen anyone be blamed for being sick because of “secret sin”. There is no secret to God.

I hate that this was your experience. What you endured was neither Apostolic nor a reflection of what the church is supposed to be. That was a cult, plain and simple. Nothing about what you experienced reflected the heart or teachings of Jesus, regardless of how grossly they twisted and misused Scripture to justify their actions. My sincere hope is that you continue to nurture your relationship with Jesus, even if you never decide to step foot inside a church again. What people did to you in His name should never be mistaken for who He truly is.

I was raised apostolic Pentecostal in a small town just outside of Tulsa OK and I’ve been out for about 7 yrs now. When I was 19 I moved to Little Rock Arkansas and attended a very large, well known Independent Apostolic Pentecostal church until I was in my late 20’s. I can tell you, my experience growing up in it from OK to AR was extremely similar to yours and it was every bit as abusive, cultish, and far from Biblical truth as you described. I could tell you horror stories of the pastor or a visiting preacher calling people out and telling them they are going to hell because of some obscure “hidden sin” in their life, I’ve personally been humiliated in front of the entire congregation and called out by the pastor as a CHILD. When I was diagnosed with cancer in my early 20’s, as a young wife who was literally following the church rules by the book, I was told by my pastor that I might’ve been struck with cancer due to hidden sin in my life and that I needed to seek God and repent. Some years later, my newborn was used against me by that same pastor and I was told that God could take my child from me just as easily as he had been given - because the pastor didn’t think I was singing in the choir often enough. This stuff really does exist and that religion really is a cult.

My daughter visited a Pentecostal church with a friend when she was 16 and was absolutely traumatized. I had to sleep with her for several nights because she was having nightmares.

I grew up in a church like this! I was stood up for the dumbest things! Reasons: I went bowling, went to the movies, and watched the wizard of oz.

I absolutely love my Pastor, and family! I don’t know what I’d do without them! My church doesn’t do this, and you can’t put every church in the same category.

I'm sorry about this. I'm on TikTok encouraging people to visit their local United Pentecostal (or similarly believing) Church in order to be baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ. I hope posts like this don't discourage lost souls from visiting a Church that will baptize them in Jesus' Name. The United Pentecostal Church does NOT believe that parents are responsible for all the actions of their children. United Pentecostal Church ministers do NOT believe in announcing people's faults and failures to the entire congregation. This sounds like an isolated wacky pastor. Don't equate these horrible actions from just this one, lone, weird pastor with the United Pentecostal Church.

Went through this when I was a kid , it was very traumatizing. If we missed a service even prayer meeting we got called out . If you changed churches or backslid you got excommunicated by your own family . I still have ptsd to this day from that church . Granted every Pentecostal church is not like that one so I cannot bash them .

Grew up apostolic, my grandfather was a very revered teacher/preacher in the denomination. Left the church when I was 24 and was told I was going to hell by my uncle. I have so many stories. It is absolutely a cult. I’m so glad you made it out.

I was absolutely slandered and lied about by the pastors daughter in law, she did it to everyone else, and had absolutely trashed me once that I know of years before all of this. I don’t know why I thought she wouldn’t do it to me. She trashed the pastor and made up absolutely horrific lies about them, such as financial abuses and insinuating that they were “weird” with her children, that I just had to keep to myself because it was so wild, I told myself it wasn’t true so I just put it out of my mind. I don’t know who else she slandered them to but that was always a worry in my mind that someone might believe her. I finally had enough and spoke to the pastor about it, someone close to me warned me about speaking up, since nepotism is rampant in this organization, anyways the pastor said she was “repentant” she could turn on the hysterical tears at the drop of a hat. Said that I wasn’t innocent in this because I sat and listened to her and even agreed that her mother in law might have some boundary issues, that makes me at fault for being maliciously lied about😅She absolutely hates all of the women but always loved their husbands, which is what she accused me of when she first met because her husband was the best man at my wedding and my husband and I really loved him and thought he was a great guy and I told her that so apparently that means I wanted her husband 😂🆘 anyways my husband was called out for letting some close friends who had really pestered us to know what was happening and the pastor blasted my husband because “he had a plan” there were even some veiled threats that if anyone else found out he would know we were gossiping 😂 since saying true things ALWAYS = gossiping in this organization. God had been working on me for years before this, we saw these people as our family and they told us they felt the same way, until we weren’t useful to them anymore, I was always taught to not rock the boat, they just proved all of the red flags i had been conditioned to ignore, it still hurts sometimes but im so thankful that Jesus is not a religion and he has carried us through and I know he is drawing my husband and I closer to him everyday! Jesus>Religion

These are narcissistic people hiding behind the apostolic Pentecostal doctrine. I’m so sorry. I grew up in it and am still in it but not in a church like this. Our church doesn’t preach the standards like the UPCI does. We left that organization probably 15 years ago.

I relate to this SO much. I read where your parents left after you did and I’m so glad. My parents left a few years after I did. I truly believe that if they didn’t, we wouldn’t have a relationship today. It’s been almost 10 years since I walked away and I still can’t bring myself to join another religion. I’m terrified of traumatizing my kids!
