If someone calls me “hita” I know they have roots from here in New Mexico. If someone calls me “mija” I can tell they have roots from Mexico!

This is not “New Mexican” Spanish, these words have existed and are words that are spoken in pueblos or ranchos in different parts of Mexico. “asina/ansina” “haiga” “truje” etc have always been used and it’s just Spanish words said incorrectly.

I’m a fluent Spanish speaker with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish Language and Literature, and I had absolutely no idea New Mexican Spanish existed until recently! When I first learned about it, I was completely fascinated. I’ve lived in New Mexico for years, and as far as I know, I’ve never met anyone who speaks this dialect, or at least I didn’t realize they did. As someone who absolutely loves the Spanish language and its history, I find it incredible that such a unique variety of Spanish has been preserved right here in New Mexico. I’d love to hear someone speak it someday!

“Haiga” is “haya” said incorrectly throughout Spain and Latin America to this day. It is not New Mexican.

There is no New Mexican Spanish there are people all across Mexico and the US that speak like that just badly spoken pocho Spanish shouldn’t be classified as and dialect.

Sorry I’m from San Antonio TX and I mean that part of my family were founding members of San Antonio. The other side came from Mexico and Texas (when it was still Mexico) and both sides of my family have always used these same words.

I’ve heard arrear for driving a car, and some other slang words. No idea where they come from but I’ll list them. Picheras for overalls, chopos for pantuflas (had literally never heard this word until I moved down south), chante for house.

NM doesn’t associate with Mexico, because those families have been there before Mexico was a country and a lot of those families can trace their ancestors to the Spanish who came to conquer a new country. Or like someone I know can trace all the way back to Columbus.

It’s called español arcaico y the words you gave as examples are palabras arcaicas. Old version of Spanish brought over by some conquistadors and have stayed with us in the Americas, while the Spanish in the peninsula eveloved as all languages do; the old archaic words continue to this day in use here. In the Americas Spanish evolved differently, using words from local native tongues, environment we surround ourselves with and so like all languages do all over the world it becomes regional

Once I started taking Spanish in school I just assumed my mom and her family were mispronouncing words. It wasn’t until I found a dictionary of New Mexico and Colorado Spanish, I realized she was speaking that dialect[Red heart]
