the second one its not abuse, our coaches do that to release the muscle tension caused by the nerves

The second one is actually not harsh, it is a normal practice followed by almost all athletes—to increase blood flow and sharpen concentration.

2second one isn’t hitting her in a bad way, it’s to help get the blood working since it’s so cold in the ice rink

There is a lot of abuse in the sport, however what is shown isn’t that. Tears and emotions will be there, no matter the situation, because it’s a high level of sport. The abuse happens behind the scenes when the camera isn’t there.

Im Russian (not a figure skater, but a dancer) and it was okay for us during our dance classes. Our coaches believe that this instills discipline in us. And they hit us so that we tense the necessary muscles (in our thighs, arms, and feet).

This isn't just in this sport. I was already dancing in European championships when I was 6 years old; while I was dancing, the coach would already be standing behind the curtains shouting if I made a mistake. Sometimes I didn't dare leave the stage because I knew she would start shouting again. I am 27 now, and every time I compete in a competition, whatever it may be, a dog show for example, the result is never enough; that has been ruined.

According to her coach, for a year and a half before the Olympics, Zagitova followed a regimen in which she arrived at the ice rink at 8 a.m. and left around 9 p.m. In between, she alternated between the weight room, an hour and a half of choreography, ice time, stretching, more conditioning, and a cool-down. Her coach adds a sentence that is worth repeating in its entirety: without that regimen, she wouldn’t have reached the top. According to the same account, during the Olympic season, her feet were so raw from her skates that her coach felt sick just looking at them. She didn’t tell her that. The explanation was that if she had made it clear how bad it looked, her protégée might have lost the strength to keep going.

Slavic discipline, well maybe from a polish POV. I was always pushed to my limits to exceed, told “if I’m gonna do something I’m gonna do it properly” I think it’s old traditional values.

Can we stop pretending like it's just a Russian problem? Anyone who actually follows the sport and not just on tiktok knows that it's a global problem. I'd argue that these days Japan may be the worst. But plenty of American coaches are very abusive as well

the second coach wasn't hitting the skater! the tapping is meant to release muscle tension. you can see Olympians smack the shit out of themselves before competing all the time, in every sport

Ermmm.. it’s not Sergei’s fault if Adeliia and Kamila are crying because of their performance? Tbh, he seems like the nicest coach out of everyone in general
