MEANING: In intimate relationships, "the wind" represents the natural shifts in mood, desire, energy, life stages, and emotional distance that occur between two people. "Adjusting the sail" means changing how you approach, nurture, and invite intimacy rather than demanding that your partner or the dynamic instantly bend to your immediate needs. Here is a deeper look at what this principle means for true intimacy: 1. Emotional Intimacy: Meeting Reality, Not Expectations The Wind: Your partner may be going through stress, burnout, grief, or personal self-doubt, causing them to withdraw or seem emotionally distant. Fighting the Wind: Pressuring them to "open up," complaining that they aren't as affectionate as before, or taking their quietness as a personal attack. Adjusting the Sail: Shifting your approach from demanding connection to creating a safe space. You adjust by offering active listening, patience, and soft presence without requiring an immediate emotional return. 2. Physical & Sexual Intimacy: Adapting to Changing Seasons The Wind: Physical desire naturally ebbs and flows due to stress, age, physical health, busy schedules, or life transitions (like parenting or career changes). Fighting the Wind: Expecting physical intimacy to remain identical to the "honeymoon stage," or treating fluctuations in libido as a personal rejection or a broken contract. Adjusting the Sail: Redefining how physical closeness is expressed. It means prioritizing non-demanding touch (cuddling, massages, holding hands), exploring new ways to connect, and focusing on mutual comfort rather than performance or routine. 3. Vulnerability: Letting Go of Control The Wind: Intimacy requires exposure, and exposure brings uncertainty. You cannot control how your partner receives your deepest fears or secrets. Fighting the Wind: Demanding absolute guarantees, wearing emotional armor, or expecting your partner to validate every insecurity before you open up. Adjusting the Sail: Learning to manage your own emotional regulation. It means being willing to express vulnerability without demanding a specific, scripted reaction, allowing genuine closeness to grow organically. Comparing Clinging vs. Adapting in Intimacy

“Woah, you spend so much on xyz!”👇 I’m sure we’ve all heard someone’s unsolicited comment in our life about choices we make with our money. For us, this most commonly happens when people see our grocery budget (which is $1,000 per month). Why so much? Because we eat organic whole foods and we hardly eat out, that means every single meal is made at home every time. Maybe for you it’s your mortgage because you live in Cali and nothing is even safe to consider buying under $500,000. Or maybe it’s your daycare costs because you’ve looked into the cheaper options and you noticed red flags. Whatever it is for you, try not to fall into the comparison trap. There are good reasons people spend more than others and a lot of those reasons are out of our control (like location of living). But wait does that mean my $3,000 mortgage per month is justified? Well it depends on the individual. My rule of thumb is 25% of your take home pay should be spent on your monthly mortgage if you tithe 10% to your local church, and if you don’t, 35%. This leaves you with enough wiggle room to achieve your goals and give because often the morrgage is the biggest line item on the budget. I use the mortgage as an example here but really this principle can be applied to all of your bills. So how do you know if you are spending what is right for you and your family? You’ve got to get on a written budget, like yesterday! This is the only way you can see how you are truly doing in the area of financial stewardship. If you want to check out my templates that I offer and get started, link is in my bio! 💕
