Not every player is preparing to perform the same actions. So why should every player prepare in exactly the same way? A collective warm-up has an important role before kick-off: progressively increasing intensity, exposing players to key movement patterns, rehearsing technical actions and preparing the group for the demands of competition. But within that structure, there is also value in position-specific preparation. A centre-back, full-back, midfielder and winger may all play the same game, but the actions they are likely to perform can look very different. A winger may need to prepare for explosive accelerations, high-speed runs, sharp changes of direction and attacking 1v1 actions. A centre-back may place greater emphasis on defensive footwork, opening and closing space, aerial actions, backwards-to-forwards transitions and explosive movements over shorter distances. A midfielder may benefit from repeated scanning, receiving on different body orientations, manipulating the ball under pressure and constantly adjusting their position before the next action. The objective isn’t to create four completely separate warm-ups. It is to understand that specificity can exist within the collective structure. After the general preparation has been completed, small positional elements can expose players to movements, pictures and technical actions that are more representative of what they are about to experience. And that specificity isn’t only physical. It can be: ⚽ Technical — touches, passes and actions relevant to the role
🧠 Perceptual — scanning and recognising information before receiving
🏃 Physical — accelerating, decelerating and moving in position-specific patterns
🎯 Tactical — rehearsing movements and situations the player is likely to encounter A good warm-up shouldn’t simply make players warm. It should progressively prepare them for what they are actually about to do. Same match. Same team. Different positional demands.
