Waking up this morning and trying to process the election results is difficult. As a 19-year-old queer, disabled woman in British Columbia, I’m genuinely worried about what a Conservative supermajority could mean for the future of this province. Healthcare, disability supports, LGBTQ+ rights, education, affordable housing, and basic human rights are not just political talking points to me. These are things that directly affect my life and the lives of so many others. I’ve spent years fighting for my independence, my safety, my identity, and access to the support I need just to live with dignity. The thought of having to fight even harder is exhausting. What hurts most is feeling like we’re going backwards. We’ve made so much progress toward building a more accepting and inclusive society, yet here we are, worrying about whether that progress will be protected. I recognize that people voted for different reasons and have different priorities. But for those of us who already face significant barriers, the uncertainty surrounding potential policy changes is frightening. This morning, I’m thinking about the queer kids who don’t feel safe at home, disabled people already struggling to access care, families trying to make ends meet, and everyone wondering what the next few years might bring. We deserve a province where everyone can live safely, independently, and with dignity. I hope that remains a priority, regardless of who’s in government. ❤️ #BCPolitics #DisabilityRights #LGBTQRights #HumanRights #BritishColumbia
