@dorayasweets: Mixed rice is said to have begun as a way to save precious rice. Takikomi gohan is rice cooked together with vegetables and other ingredients. Japan's agriculture ministry writes that it is said to have started back when rice was precious, when people cooked all kinds of ingredients in with it to make the rice go further. The same page says that as far back as the Nara period, rice stretched with foxtail millet was called awa gohan. In Nara Prefecture, soy-sauce mixed rice is called iro gohan, and carrot, shiitake, burdock and thin fried tofu are the usual ingredients.
