CARAMELISED ONION JAM 🧅 Make it yourself in 30min! Caramelised. Sweet. Jammy. Perfect in sandwiches, on your festive cheese boards, on pizzas & bruschettas, pairs great with goats cheese…and it’s so easy to make, you’ll need just a few ingredients that you probably already have at home 🕺🏻 Let’s go! Ingredients (makes one jar) 500-600g brown onion 🧅 (approx 4-5 bigger onions) - chopped or finely sliced 60-80g sugar - I went with a mixture of half brown sugar/half caster sugar and reduced the amount of total sugar most recipes calls for. This results in a thicker jam but I just don’t like it that sweet so this works for us 40ml good quality balsamic vinegar 1/2tsp salt Pinch of black pepper 45ml olive oil - approx 3tbsp Thyme, rosemary, bay leaf 🍃 Step 1 Sauté onions in olive oil with salt and herbs of your choice for 15-20min over low to medium heat. You don’t want them to burn, it’s important to slowly soften them up to get them to that golden colour. Step 2 Sprinkle the sugar over the onions and leave it to slowly melt and caramelise. This will take a 3-5min, so don’t move and keep an eye on them, we don’t want that caramel to burn! Stir them around and then move on to deglazing part. Step 3 Deglaze the pan with balsamic vinegar, let it simmer slowly for another 5 min. Onions should reduce by this time and become nicely caramelised and sticky. Turn the heat off. Get those herbs out of the pan and using a spoon transfer the caramelised onions to a clean jar or a glass container 🫙 and you are done! Let the onions cool off to a room temperature before transferring them to the fridge. You can store them like this for approx 2 weeks. #o#onionjamcaramelisedonion #caramelizedonions #simplerecipes
