Do you know what it does to a person to survive abuse and then spend the rest of their life defending why they stayed, why they went back, why they didn’t report it, why they didn’t fight back, why they didn’t leave sooner? Imagine surviving the person who was supposed to love you, only to be interrogated by people who never had to survive them. Survivors carry enough. The fear. The shame that was never theirs to carry. The memories they can’t turn off. The nights they replay every decision, wondering what they could have done differently. The pieces of themselves they are still trying to put back together. And somehow, people still want an explanation for why they didn’t leave, instead of an explanation for why someone felt entitled to hurt them in the first place. We have to stop making survivors prove they were worthy of compassion. We have to stop treating their survival strategies as character flaws. We have to stop expecting people to respond perfectly to trauma while giving abusers endless opportunities to explain away their behavior. You do not know what someone endured behind closed doors. You do not know what they were threatened with, what they were afraid of, what they were trying to protect, or what it cost them to survive. Your questions can become another wound. Your judgment can become another reason someone stays silent. Believe survivors. Support them. Make room for the complicated, messy, painful reality of leaving and healing. And when someone tells you they were abused, ask yourself why your first instinct is to examine their choices instead of the person who hurt them. Survivors deserve more than applause for being strong. They deserve safety, support, justice, and the freedom to heal without being put on trial by the people around them. If you are a survivor, you do not owe the world a perfectly told story to deserve to be believed. I want to know: What do you wish people understood about domestic violence that they rarely talk about? #domesticabuse #ipv #therapy #talk #mystory
