@iamchannon: The way this is suchhh a layered topic it’s really hard to express my thoughts concisely but in addition to what has already been said, there are so many other things I think about like - Why are we so triggered by the term “church hurt” and why does it often seem to be those who have either been the ones to inflict it or have never actually experienced it themselves? To me accurately terming experiences is like diagnosing an illness so that appropriate treatment could be applied. I think about the woman with the issue of blood or the man with leprosy. If we were never meant to use labels, perhaps those two cases would have simply just been classed as “sick.” I don’t see hurt as much different. And I am not talking about “Sister so and so gave me attitude or said my dress too short” 🙄 Even though people leave for many trivial reasons, there are also very serious, very real very confusing and painful experiences that I have personally journeyed through with people who have felt the harms of rejection, neglect, spiritual abuse (and so much more) yet somehow still manage not to fall away from Christ Himself. And this is why I have chosen to make mention of this experience. Yeah I risk being categorized but it’s worth it if it means speaking up for those who have left without a voice. Because if I can help one other human feel seen, validated and a little less alone by acknowledging that the very people they hoped would help ended up causing so much pain, then maybe just maybe I can inspire hope in them to keep pursuing God as well as Godly community. I have seen and experienced the ways in which people hurt. But I have also seen and experienced the beautiful ways that God has sent people who heal. Praying that you keep the courage to search until your heart finds that safe place to call home. 🏠 ❤️✝️✨ #christians #church #people #faithtok #hurt

The crazy thing is, growing up, accountability was always projected outward. We were taught who to stay away from and what company not to keep, yet when the same behaviours are displayed within the four walls of the church, they are often swept under the rug and excused. Oftentimes, leaders within the church dismiss the reality of church hurt by asking, “If somebody hurts you at work, would you leave your job? So why leave the church when somebody hurts you?” But I think that is such a poor comparison. How can we compare people in environments where the word of God may not be known, taught, or actively practised with fellow believers whom we come to fellowship with, grow with, and learn to live like Christ alongside? We come to church seeking refuge from the very things that hurt us in the world. We come to encourage each other to lay our burdens at the altar, empty our hearts, find encouragement, and have the weight on our shoulders lifted among people who profess to share our faith. So how do we then become guilty of creating the very same environment and communities we encourage others to leave and come to without any difference. The church should not be a continuation of the hurt people are trying to heal from. “Well, that's just how she is” or “He's been here for 25 years.” Since when did personality, position, or longevity in the church become a justification for behaviour that contradicts the very word we profess to live by? Longevity in the church should never be mistaken for maturity in Christ. We speak about love, grace, forgiveness, and the fruit of the holy Spirit, but these principles must be demonstrated, not just preached. The shepherd's responsibility is to guide and protect the sheep, not allow some to be continually hurt to preserve the comfort or reputation of others. We cannot be so concerned about protecting the institution that we neglect the people within it. Accountability is not the absence of love, it is an expression of it. People should not have to recover from the harm caused by the church while the church refuses to acknowledge that harm. But God's love remains steadfast!❤️
