I hate hearing “its the thought that counts” when being given something that has zero thought put into it whatsoever

I just had to stare at the "basic gift for girl child" items & try not to lash out. I told them over & over that I don't do makeup, I don't really like perfume, I don't like dresses, etc but that's all I ever received. I ended up cutting off my entire family, they didn't even care to know me so it isn't much of a loss.

My parents have shown for YEARS that they know nothing about me or my interests. To the point that I started making a word document every year listing out 5 things I'd be okay with getting for Christmas or my birthday (they're only a few weeks apart). Nothing over $50, my sizes listed if it's clothing, with direct links from where to buy the items. My parents complained that that was "taking the surprise out of the holiday" so I started listing my interests at the bottom of the document. I've had several of the same interests for nearly half my life, but they don't remember any of them.

“Sometimes no gift at all is better than a gift with no meaning” 100% Year after year I want nothing for my bday or Christmas, and every year I’m given something I don’t use or doesn’t fit me

This happened to me as a kid, too. I would be upset about not being listened to, and get "punished" for being a brat. It hurt so deeply that my parents would get my siblings gifts they loved, and then get me like, a calculator. And yes, that Even Stephens episode hit me hard.

this is why I love love love love love love handmade presents, because whether you meant it to or not, all art has meaning! The fact that you took time to consider and think about how to make something for me is enough

I spent my childhood being the "hard one to buy for" kid, when all I wanted was anything Pokemon related. The only time I ever complained was my 21st birthday when I got a football jersey, I'm the one family member who everyone knows has zero interest in sports. It was the only time I openly said "I don't want this", it was an expensive jersey and the only gift I received.

It was a unicorn 🦄; I am 33 and I still remember this. I wanted a unicorn plush (I was like 7), but I specifically wanted a purple or blue unicorn; I even pointed out the exact unicorn I wanted. On my birthday I opened up a unicorn plush and immediately burst into tears, because it was PINK. It was from my grandma, and she freaked out because I was crying asking what was wrong. I told her that the unicorn was pink, and that I had told everyone repeatedly at this point that I HATE pink. I loved that she remembered I wanted a unicorn plush, but I was unset because I had been ignored for over a year that I HATED the color pink. I calmed down, she told me they were out of the other unicorns and she had found this one and thought it was cute, but that she hadn’t considered that I didn’t like the color pink. Like two weeks later I go over to grandma’s house and she sits me down and pulls out the exact unicorn I had pointed out to start with, and apologised for not having listened me previously about not liking the color pink. I was never given anything pink again by anyone in family, and yes at 33 I still HATE the color pink. (Also I still have both unicorns, they are in a box in my closet)

I understand 100%. I have 5 siblings and one year for Christmas my mom made everyone and their spouses homemade blankets (they're really cute and she said they are easy to make. But still, props to her for the time and effort overall). Each blanket was themed based on something the recipient loved (like one had a patterns with the tardis, another was frogs etc). Everyone's blanket was perfect for them, except mine. I was given a white blanket with line drawings of Winnie the Pooh... I asked my mom why did she choose Pooh for me and she got offended "Well there wasn't anything else!" I then asked her why didnt she make mine bugs, since I've loved bugs and creepy crawlies since i was tiny. She tried to make me feel bad about making her feel bad. Well, none of the other blankets were bug themed and I've seen the fabric patterns available at the store she frequents. There were a TON of different bug patterns available. Yeah, everyone else's was perfect, even my partner's was perfect for him, so........... The realization of how much I was ignored hit real hard 🙃

I had an argument with my dad about what the phrase “It’s the thought that counts” means. He thinks it means that thinking of the person at all is enough whereas I argued that you have to think about the persons interests. I hate nuts, and I’m allergic to walnuts. So, I argued that if he got me a basket of fancy mixed nuts, I shouldn’t be grateful because he wasn’t actually thinking about ME. He believed that getting the gift at all was “the thought that counts” 🥲

i was given a child nail polish kit. I never liked nail polish and disliked the smell. and yet I still acted happy because I was being recorded on the family camera. Same this with Harry Potter socks, not once have I watched Harry Potter, let alone read the books.it 2asnt until much later did they actually start getting me stuff I even remotely liked. I had a huge tmnt phase but now it's diminished quite a lot due to trauma and being exposed to stresses and issues children shouldn't be exposed to, and now I receive tmnt stuff.. but it really has only ever been tmnt stuff. Maybe I'm the issue, I'm not sure.

I love giving gifts because I can count on one hand the number of times I was given anything that made me feel like the person knew me, or even just considered me.

that was my entire existence as the parentified eldest daughter. I raised my siblings, had no childhood, and every time I asked for even a night to hang out with friends, it would be a no. then I was expected to be grateful for gifts which I could not use and ultimately ended up giving to my siblings.

You put it into words! My immediate family listened, but despite the amount of time I spent whinging about the dead markers in those cheap af art kits and I just kept getting those. Or blank, thin, useless socks. Or jewellry that was far more the gifter's style than mine and any attempt to explain this very thing got me shut down for being ungrateful.

this is how I feel when people dont even care to ask what I want, like I have some pretty basic interests (pokemon being a big example) and yet i'm given things that I dont even care for or use?? (not to mention being given hygiene products as a gift,, like omg)

I was gifted clothes every year while my siblings got everything in their list from the iPod to the stuffed animals they liked. Then my clothes were given to my sibling because “I was ungrateful” and then taken to a program for free clothes which were also gifted to my sibling. I was the excuse to get free things because I had no escape.

There is nothing worse as a child than showing your parents who you are, yearning to be known, and then having them utterly ignore that and treat you like a generic child of your age group.

When I was 16 my mom asked my sisters (18 & 24) and me what we all wanted for Christmas. My sisters produced a list of at least $400+ worth of stuff. All I wanted was a microphone for my computer that was $50 at Best Buy. I didn’t care what color. Christmas comes and I did not get that microphone. I got a bunch of random stuff I would never use, but one relative got me a $50 Best Buy gift card and the next day I was getting ready to leave the house to go, and my parents asked me what I was doing. “Going to Best Buy to get the one thing I asked for” was the wrong answer. Grounded. It’s been over a decade and I’m still pissed about it.

i went from actually wanting gifts to just saying "just give me the money youd spend instead, please" because im an artist, they always get me art supplies. I work almost exclusively with digital art. I dont use supplies, and if i decide to... theyre going to be the best supplies, and no one is going to want to buy those for me because spending 5 bucks on a piece of paper feels outrageous to non-artists 😭
