A person was taken into custody in Arizona and is being questioned in relation to the suspected kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie, authorities confirmed Tuesday evening. According to a statement from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department obtained by USA TODAY on Feb. 10, deputies detained an individual during a traffic stop south of Tucson earlier in the day. The individual is now being interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation into Guthrie’s disappearance. Officials said more details will be shared as they become available. ABC News first reported the detention shortly after 7 p.m. local time, citing an unnamed law enforcement source. The development follows the release of surveillance images by FBI Director Kash Patel earlier that day. The images, captured by Guthrie’s doorbell camera, show a masked person whom authorities describe as armed and allegedly interfering with the camera at the front entrance of her home on the morning she vanished. Investigators have not publicly identified the individual in the photos. Nancy Guthrie, 84, is the mother of “Today” show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie. She has not been seen since Jan. 31 and was officially reported missing Feb. 1. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has stated they believe she was abducted from her residence outside Tucson. In the days since her disappearance, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings, Annie and Camron, have shared emotional appeals on social media asking for their mother’s safe return. In a video posted Feb. 7, the family said they were willing to pay for information leading to her recovery. Multiple news organizations have also reported receiving alleged ransom notes in recent days, though authorities have not confirmed their authenticity. The FBI said one such message included deadlines of Feb. 5 and Feb. 9. “We believe our mom is still alive,” Savannah Guthrie said in a video posted Feb. 9. “We need help. Law enforcement is working around the clock to bring her home. She was taken, and we don’t know where she is.” #fyp #viral
