He was a Dutch farmer with almost no formal schooling who decided that the people the regime wanted dead were still “God’s chosen people.” His name was Johannes Bogaard — known to many as Hannes or Uncle Hannes. When the Germans occupied the Netherlands he took a train for the first time in his life, travelled to Amsterdam, and offered a Jewish family he knew a place on his farm. One invitation became many. Before long the Bogaard family was hiding dozens of Jews, most of them children, in holes dug in the land, in haystacks, in drainage canals, and in makeshift shelters built from wood and straw. They had little money. Feeding so many people required constant improvisation and risk. In October 1943 the farm was raided. Thirty-four adults were caught and deported; none survived. A large group of children, however, were hidden by one of the sons in the shallow water of a drainage ditch behind the house. They stood for hours with only their heads above the surface until the danger passed. All of those children lived. Bogaard continued the work until the end of the war. Estimates say he and his family helped save around three hundred people, the majority of them children. In 1963 Yad Vashem recognised him as Righteous Among the Nations. One of the boys he had sheltered met him again in Israel that year. The quiet farmer who had once opened his land to strangers never sought fame; he simply refused to close the door. #fyp #HistoryTime
