SPOILER: an ancient meteorite buried beneath the glacier is creating physical copies of people (dead or alive) so that means 2 identical people may exist at the same time. these “clones” are manifestations created from memories, guilt, longing, grief, unresolved emotions. the copies seem to embody the strongest emotion surrounding a person. for example, Gríma is grieving her sister Ása who died a year ago. now suddenly, a clone of her dead sister emerged from the ashes. basically, clone-Ása exists largely because Gríma could never move past her sister’s death. clone-Ása represents her sister’s unfinished grief. her purpose becomez helping Gríma accept reality. In the end, even though they are just clones, they are not fake people. they have consciousness, they love, suffer, they fear death, and they believe they are real. once Gríma accept the reality of her sister’s death, Ása’s role is over. She walks into the sea and disappears, essentially sacrificing herself. in the final scene, more ash-covered figures are still emerging. the cycle continues and no tidy resolution. only acceptance.
