Los Angeles Mayor Elect Nithya Raman has not even taken office, and she is already standing with immigrant families. Just before midnight on November 6, ICE agents showed up at White Memorial Medical Center in Boyle Heights. ICE watchers recording at Boyle and Pennsylvania say agents tried to detain patients at the hospital and were denied entry. On video, watchers count as many as 11 agents and say two U.S. citizens were arrested and pepper spray was used. A federal agent on camera says one man was arrested for assaulting a federal agent. Just after midnight, LAPD officers arrived at the hospital parking lot, and watchers said they appeared to be working with ICE. The next day, the community came back to the same corner, chanting

"What happened last night at this hospital was an affront to the wishes of the American people and to the people of Los Angeles," Raman said. "I am an immigrant myself. I have felt the fear that the people of Boyle Heights have felt." Her promise to families: "You are not alone. This is your city. You belong here, and we will all fight together to make sure everyone is protected."
