THE INVESTMENT GARAGE The journey behind the investment is more than a trip to Embu. It is a look inside an investment workshop and investment consultation where a group of established business owners came together to learn how to make better decisions with their money. I was invited to conduct an investment workshop in Embu County, Kenya, focused on practical investment education, stock market investing and financial decision-making. Instead of simply giving people a list of shares to buy, the goal was to help them understand the process behind making an investment decision. A major part of the session focused on shares in Kenya and stock market investing through the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE). We looked at how to evaluate a company before investing, analyse financial statements, understand valuation, assess profitability, identify quality investment opportunities and determine whether a company actually makes sense for a particular portfolio. We also went deeper into portfolio diversification and sector diversification, including how investors can spread capital across different sectors and across companies within those sectors instead of concentrating too heavily in one area. We discussed how to recognise potential opportunities during market pullbacks and price dips, how to think about better entry points, and how to avoid chasing stocks after significant price movements. Another important part of the investment consultation was understanding the mistakes investors commonly make: buying based on hype, following other people's stock picks without doing their own analysis, ignoring valuation, failing to diversify, and investing without clearly defining their financial goals, investment horizon and risk tolerance. The conversation did not stop with shares. We also explored other investment options in Kenya, including ETFs, REITs, special funds, fixed-income investments and infrastructure bonds, and discussed how different investment instruments can play different roles within a broader investment strategy. Then we moved from group financial education to individual questions. After the main investment workshop, participants had the opportunity to bring forward their own investment questions, financial goals, portfolios and specific situations. This created room for one-on-one discussions that were more tailored to each investor rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach. And that is what an investment workshop for business owners, investment groups, chamas, organizations and Kenyan investors can look like: understanding the market, analysing opportunities, discussing risk, building stronger investment strategies and learning how to make informed financial decisions. Because successful investing is not simply about knowing what to buy. It is about knowing how to evaluate it, what you are paying for it, where it fits in your portfolio, when an entry may make sense, what risks you are taking and whether the investment is aligned with your financial goals. This was the journey behind the investment workshop in Embu, and behind the scenes, there was a lot more happening than what could fit into one video.
