Rip Tetsuya China 🕊️🕊️ || #tetsuya #chiba #ashitanojoe#tomorrowsjoe#edit#rip#qdp Tetsuya Chiba (January 11, 1939 – October 22, 2026) was a legendary Japanese manga artist (mangaka), globally recognized for illustrating *Ashita no Joe* (*Rocky Joe*)—one of the most influential works in the history of Japanese comics. Born in Tokyo, Chiba cemented his legacy in 1968 by bringing to life this dramatic tale of boxing and working-class identity, written by Ikki Kajiwara. Throughout his prolific career, he created other notable stories, such as *Yuki’s Sun* (*Yuki no Taiyou*); its 1972 pilot short film marked the solo directorial debut of the acclaimed Hayao Miyazaki. His impact on Japanese art and society was so profound that, in 2024, he made history by becoming the first manga artist to receive the Order of Culture—Japan’s highest civilian honor. Following his passing at the age of 87 in a Tokyo hospital, Chiba leaves behind an indelible mark, which lives on both through the generations of creators he inspired and the "Tetsuya Chiba Award," established by the publisher Kodansha to foster new talent in the medium.
