This wasn’t simply another performance in front of a stadium audience, it was a performance reaching an international audience, giving every gesture, every expression, and every moment of emphasis considerably greater visibility. And that’s why I find V’s particularly enthusiastic participation in Cypher Pt. 4 worth examining. First, we need to understand what the song actually represents. Cypher Pt. 4 isn’t merely a song about ignoring haters. It’s a declaration of artistic identity, self-confidence, and superiority over those who spent years questioning the rap line’s legitimacy, talent, and achievements. RM, Suga, and J-Hope are asserting that their success is the result of their own work, sacrifices, determination and artistic development. The recurring message, “I love myself, I know myself,” is fundamental. It’s about knowing who you are, recognizing what you’ve accomplished, and refusing to allow other people’s judgments to define your identity. Now consider V’s behavior during that performance. The emphasis he placed on the song can be interpreted as more than simple enthusiasm, particularly when considered alongside the public image he projects and the criticism surrounding a lot of his actions. The lyrics offer a very convenient narrative: those who criticize you are haters, those who question you are jealous, and their attention only confirms your importance. And this is where I see the contradiction. Because adopting that narrative allows someone to place themselves in a position where criticism no longer needs to be examined, it can simply be dismissed. If people question your behavior, they’re jealous. If people disagree with your choices, they’re haters. If people point out contradictions, they’re obsessed with you. And if people keep talking about you, that supposedly proves your superiority. BUT ATTENTION IS NOT VALIDATION. AND CRITICISM IS NOT AUTOMATICALLY HATRED. Criticizing that imbalance doesn’t mean resenting V’s “success”, it means questioning how attention is distributed, how narratives are constructed, and whose contribution ultimately receives recognition. The song celebrates artists who fought to establish their own credibility through their own work. That makes the contrast particularly striking, because there is a difference between earning recognition through your artistic contribution and becoming the center of attention through someone else’s…. And the irony becomes even greater when the song’s message of self-awareness is reduced to an attitude of perceived superiority. Knowing yourself also requires the ability to recognize your limitations, acknowledge your mistakes, and understand how your actions affect others. It requires self-reflection. It requires accountability. And it certainly doesn’t mean that every person who questions you must be wrong simply because you’ve achieved success. The choice of moment, the visibility, the lyrics, and the broader context create an image that can easily be read as a public assertion of importance. There’s nothing wrong with confidence, there’s certainly nothing wrong with enjoying a BTS performance. The problem begins when confidence appears to turn into a sense of entitlement, and criticism is treated as something only inferior or jealous people would express. Because success doesn’t exempt anyone from responsibility. Popularity doesn’t make every decision admirable. And being constantly discussed doesn’t necessarily mean being respected. Cypher Pt. 4 is ultimately about artists who know their worth because they know what they’ve done to earn it.
