A fight broke out in a Connecticut courtroom today as a man arrested for fatally stabbing his girlfriend appeared before a judge. Tyreek Black, 21, is accused of murdering Destiny Rumley, also 21, early Tuesday at an apartment complex in New Haven. A three-year-old child witnessed the murder, police say, and Black fought with police before they arrested him and took him to jail. Officers found Rumley in the apartment with nine stab wounds, and she was pronounced dead at a hospital. Black is charged with five crimes: murder, risk of injury to a minor, assaulting emergency personnel, interfering with police and interfering with an emergency call. New Haven Judicial District Judge Patrick Clifford set his bond at $2.5 million today (Wednesday, December 31) and called the police report “ a very disturbing report to read.” At the police station, Black “did not disagree” that he stabbed Rumley as she tried to call police to report him verbally threatening her. “It sounds like they had a prior relationship some time ago, and with some attempt over the last few weeks, according to the defendant, to rekindle,” Judge Clifford said. Clifford said “a domestic homicide” calls “for a serious bond.” Pre-trial services recommended $1 million, but the judge imposed $2.5 million. Clifford acknowledged that Black, who grimaced and squirmed through the five-minute appearance, was “emotional right now.” Rumley’s family members in the courtroom gallery gasped and cried when a prosecutor said she was stabbed nine times. Some lunged at Black as he was led out of the courtroom, and a large altercation ensued with courtroom deputies. You can watch Black’s public defender say he’s “truly a product of his environment” here @Meghann Cuniff. #law #crime #court #legal
