@veyranocturne: WHEN DOES HAVING AN OPINION BECOME AN INVITATION TO BE HARASSED? Apparently, having an opinion that someone doesn’t agree with is enough to make you a target for repeated bullying, harassment, name-calling, and accusations. For a while now, I’ve been dealing with repeated comments from certain individuals who seem determined to turn a difference of opinion into something much more personal. And at this point, I think it’s time to talk about something much bigger than a disagreement on social media. There is a difference between disagreeing with someone and deliberately trying to intimidate, ridicule, or silence them. I’ve been called a hypocrite, a liar, a troll, an attention seeker, mentally ill, and just about everything else you can imagine. I’ve repeatedly been accused of operating multiple fake accounts simply because other people happen to share similar opinions. I’ve watched the same accusations get repeated over and over, despite asking for actual evidence. And apparently, sharing an opinion or discussing information that’s already publicly available is enough to justify becoming someone’s personal target. But here’s what I find interesting. The people who seem so concerned about what others are saying have no problem repeatedly showing up in comment sections to insult, mock, and make personal accusations. They accuse others of bullying while engaging in the very behavior they claim to oppose. They demand accountability from everyone else while seemingly refusing to examine their own actions. And somehow, they’re convinced that repeatedly calling someone names makes their argument more credible. It doesn’t. Having an opinion is not bullying. Asking questions is not harassment. Disagreeing with someone is not an attack. But repeatedly targeting someone, making personal insults, questioning their mental health, and attempting to humiliate them publicly? That’s behavior worth calling out. And no, I’m not going to pretend that it’s acceptable simply because it’s happening behind a screen. What concerns me most is how normalized this behavior has become. People seem to forget that there’s an actual human being on the other side of those comments. Someone with a family, feelings, responsibilities, and a life outside of social media. You don’t know what someone is going through. You don’t know what battles they’re fighting. And you certainly don’t know enough about a stranger to justify repeatedly attacking their character. The irony of bullying someone while claiming to stand against bullying shouldn’t be lost on anyone. I’m not asking everyone to agree with me. I’m not asking anyone to like me. And I’m certainly not asking for permission to have an opinion. I’m asking for the same basic respect that everyone deserves. Disagree with me. Challenge my perspective. Have a conversation. That’s what social media is for. But leave the personal attacks, baseless accusations, and repeated harassment out of it. And to anyone else who’s experienced this kind of behavior, please understand that you don’t have to tolerate mistreatment just because someone disagrees with you. You have every right to set boundaries, document what’s happening, and speak up about your experience. I refuse to be silenced for having a voice. Disagreement is normal. Harassment is not. And if the only way you know how to defend your opinion is by repeatedly tearing someone else down, maybe it’s time to reconsider who is actually doing the bullying.
