What to do on a Friday night in Philly? 🌆 Go for some Qawwali, silly! 🎶 I first fell in love with the music, poetry and spirituality of the tradition back in the 1990s. ❤️ Its message for me last week: in the face of despair, we must embrace each other in defiant joy! ✊✨ On a chilly September 25th, 🍂 the Saami Brothers Qawwali Ensemble performed a concert organized by Dr. Amber Abbas, Professor of History and Director of the Nealis Program in Asian Studies at Saint Joseph's University. 🏛️ The ensemble belongs to the 13th-century Qawwal Bacha Delhi Gharana lineage 📜 and uses a 49-note microtonal scale taught by Ustad Naseeruddin Saami. 🎼 They stand out for their use of Khayal, a classical, wordless vocal form based on strict breath control, 🫁 tonal precision 🎯 and ecstatic improvisation. 🙌 Ehnomusicologists like Hiromi Lorraine Sakata sometimes compare the broader Qawwali genre to Black American gospel music, 🎤 noting how both traditions use powerful call-and-response dynamics 👋🗣️ to foster intense collective spiritual elation 🕊️ and celebrate universal love. ❤️‍🔥 #Philly  #LiveMusic  #SaamiBrothers  #SufiMusic #DefiantJoy
