Calling all fans of fall foliage, soothing hot springs, epic train shots, and traditional crafts! If it's not already, Naruko Onsen needs to be on your bucket list for autumn-time adventures in 2026. Located in Miyagi Prefecture, this old-school hot spring town is one of Tohoku’s great onsen destinations, with hundreds of individual hot spring sources and seven of Japan’s ten recognized types of spring water. Come autumn though, the real star of the show is nearby Naruko Gorge. The roughly 100-meter-deep ravine erupts in reds, oranges, and yellows from late October into early November. Better still, the JR Rikuu East Line runs straight through the gorge, meaning you can get that proverbial money shot seen here of a train passing beneath the foliage-covered cliffs. And yes, it looks every bit as ridiculous in person as it does in photos. Back in town, Naruko is also famous for its distinctive kokeshi dolls, a traditional craft that has been produced in this part of Miyagi for generations. Basically, you can spend the day chasing autumn colors and trains, pick up a handmade kokeshi, and then soak your tired ass in an onsen afterward. What more could you possibly want from an autumn adventure in Tohoku?
